Owner of The Singing Cook

Around this time 8 years ago Jenni was embarking on the risky endeavor of opening a retail shop just as the country was emerging from the Great Recession. Crazy? Her parents thought so at the time, but after almost 8 years The Singing Cook is still going strong and has become a beloved downtown shop, and so far the best part of her journey has been the joy of owning a shop in the hometown where she was born and raised.

Almost every day since opening she is asked “so does the cook sing?” The answer is, why yes, she does. Though she began as a vocal music major, primarily in opera, at the University of Colorado, Jenni’s true love is Broadway and she made the switch to earn a BFA in Musical Theatre. If you catch her on a “good voice” day, she will sing you a tune from the Broadway show of your choice (only been stumped once so far).

Her second love is cooking and when she found herself needing a new career path, a kitchen shop seemed the perfect fit, and it is her musical background that inspired her to call her shop The Singing Cook. As a foodie and self-taught home cook with an ever expanding collection of cookbooks and on-again, off-again addiction to cooking shows, she often found herself running around town searching for that elusive ingredient or cool new tool for that new recipe, not always successfully, and would say to herself, “if I had a kitchen store, I’d have that.” Big or small, kitchen shops also seem to draw you in, and though her shop is small she strives to make it a friendly place where customers can say, “Oh, The Singing Cook has that!” Pop in and say hello soon!

The Black Family House
725 Lincoln St.
The house at 725 Lincoln was owned by various families over the years, including the Swanbergers, Bibers, Korbels, Blacks, Forbis’ and Soleks. Lydia and Fred Swanberger built the house between 1900 and 1904. William and Mary Korbel owned the Louisville Drug Co. at Main and Spruce streets.

Martin Black was a miner and union organizer during the coal mine wars of 1910-1914. He lobbied Washington at the time of the Ludlow Massacre and other violent clashes. He was also active in the Louisville community as a member of the baseball team and the town council. Lizzie Thirlaway Black was a member of one of Louisville’s first families. She attended a dance of Louisville’s Bachelor Maids club in 1908 and apparently met Martin there!

The current owner is Betty Solek, who is active in community interests.

Happy March!

Spring is on its way and it looks like March will come in Colorado style, a little weather to keep us on our toes. But make sure to take advantage of the clear and sunny days and take a trip downtown and help rescue the services, shops and restaurants from the winter doldrums!

Latin Vibes from Los Bohemios

Los Bohemios is an acoustic ensemble composed of some of the best musicians in Colorado. They play traditional Cuban Son, Salsa, Cumbia and Boleros, as well as Latin Rock and Latin Jazz. Los Bohemios features Ricardo Peña on vocals, guitar, requinto and piano, Amy Biondo on vocals and hand percussion, Ed Edwards on guitar and tres and vocals, Mark Diamond on upright bass, and a killer percussion section with Jose Espino and Dean Kielian on congas, bongos and timbales. A major feature of the band is their beautiful three part harmonies mostly in Español. If you love Buena Vista Social Club or Gloria Estefan, and the romantic ballads in the style of Los Panchos, you’ll be in for a treat! Backbends offer a variety of benefits from a strengthened spine, open heart and released tension in the shoulders, to a sense of freedom from the stress and emotion we carry throughout our nervous system. However, properly practicing and executing a quality backbend can be tricky. We often rely on the innate flexibility of our lumbar spine, without much attention to using the muscles of our upper back, arms and legs for support. This can result in pain in the lower back directly following a backbend, a sense of exhaustion, and even injury.

If you are looking to deepen your understanding of the mechanics of backbending, and want to refine your backbending practice, join us for this 2 hour workshop. We will discuss the different types of backbends, the essential components to backbending safely, and different ways of supporting or modifying backbends in your regular yoga practice. $30
